“Play well, grow well!” The curricula were revised sequentially in 2019 for age between 3 and 5 years old as a Nuri Curriculum, and in 2020 for age between 0 to 5 years old as a Standard Childcare Curriculum. This revision focuses on the transition to a play-centered curriculum for infants and toddlers, securing sufficient play time, and re-understanding the meaning of play and learning. It is in line with the Hansol Child Care Foundation and Telstar daycare center that have emphasized the importance of “play”. The daycare center watches the play started from the children’s point of view with an attitude that understands and respects children from their level. The center also helps the play to be continued and expanded via a teacher’s council. I would like to share the “Play Journal” of Telstar daycare center, which contains the process of regarding play and learning as a same one

Jumping off from the 'high' stacked cushion blocks, pasting colored paper in the 'highest' area of a transparent window, putting one’s own toys on the 'high' shelf, stepping on the bookshelf with language related books and climbing 'high' to look out of the window… children’s play always had the “high” point.

Teacher : Somi, what can you see?

Somi : Mom, mom is at work.

Somi stepped on the bookshelf with language books and looked out of the window by standing with her claws, and the other children continued to challenge themselves to go high places. Then, teachers had to look back on their thoughts that “the lower place is safer than the higher one”. Under the justification called safety, teachers have controlled and restricted children who always seek high places. However, we couldn't just pass by children who were interested in high places anymore. In addition, because safety accidents do not always occur in low places, it was necessary for us to take a deeper look at children’s “playing in high places”. Aside from worries, children controlled their bodies as they repeatedly played going up to the high places. Hence, it wasn’t very dangerous. However, it was necessary for us to ensure safety of them and support educationally for them to ‘play at high places’. In the end, the teachers discussed ways to allow children’s “appetite for high places” more safely through the teacher’s council. The result of the council for the place allowed for ‘high places’ became the “bookshelf area with language related books” where Somi looked down at her mom’s work.

Children's interests faced a new space

The space where there should be good sunlight, a bookshelf for books, and a cozy cushion mat has been changed into a space where children can safely climb high places, although it became slightly rigid. Would children love to read pictures books sitting on a cushion in the past adopt a newly changed place well? Or wouldn’t there be any conflict or wouldn’t it be a place jumping off from a chair for physical play? We had many tons of worries, but we decided to let them play at the high place and continued to watch them reading picture books at the changed place. Contrary to our predictions, children facing the high and new places were very cautious. Rather than going up on a chair without hesitation, they wandered around and explored new spaces directly with their own eyes, went onto the changed space, sat down, or leaned on a chair to read picture books. After slowly exploring the space, the children climbed up to the chairs and began to search for ‘high places’.

Children’s interests became a place for communication

Yeonwoo : Teacher! An excavator!

Teacher : Where is it?

Yeonwoo : (Pointing with a finger) Over there~

Sol : Teacher, Soyoon is there

Teacher : Do you know where Soyoon is?

Sol : (Pointing with a finger) Here!

Teacher : Oh, Soyoon is coming in with her mom

Sol : (Waving hand) Hi, Soyoon!

Other children next to Sol waved their hands to Soyoon for greetings.

Somi : Oh? That’s Sujin’s mom!

Sujin : Yes~ That’s my mom’s car. (Looking outside and waving hands) Mom~

Somi : Teacher, Sujin’s mom is here.

Thanks to a single chair that one can see outside through the window, this space has become a guest room where various stories are made such as seeing and telling moms and dads going to and from the daycare center, introducing mom and dad's company, greeting people passing by, and finding my dad’s car. The bookshelves with language books on it was mainly a place to read picture books. The location changed from time to time, but the same bookshelves and mats for rest always existed. However, the changed space for the play to go up high, everything seen outside the window

became picture books. Like reading a paper picture book, the children tried to read the scenery outside the window as if introducing them to friends and teachers. The scenery outside the window has become a very interesting picture book that never shows the same thing: clouds of various shapes, parking space of parked cars, warm sunlight, rain in monsoon season, and birds flying. The scenery outside the window became a three-dimensional picture book and came to the children, and more than any other picture book, children’s thoughts have been growing in every day and at every time. ‘Communication’ is the biggest change for children after starting the play of climbing up high. Even children who were mainly immersed in exploratory play alone, when they entered the classroom, they first climbed up the bookshelves and introduced what they see to their friends. As a result, the number of children love speaking has increased. In addition, I was able to see several times that children, who used to talk only about what they wanted to talk, has changed to the one listening to their friends’stories and continuing the conversation. The interactions between friends occurred actively. Communication has a meaning that ‘flowing well without blocks, or no misunderstanding through understanding each other’. Conversation is absolute necessary in order not to get blocked and to communicate well with each other. In order to communicate, you need a language, and to communicate in a language, you need to listen to the others. Such complicatedly defined term, communication, was realized and accomplished by placing a chair on the bookshelves with language books because of the interest of children. I expect children who will move from a society of 2 years old Kkotsemban to a larger society will grow as they continue to communicate with care and support from the teachers.
